Some tips for installing your Poles
We have now installed several dozen sets of Telephone Poles. We've learned what to do and, more importantly, what not to do. If you haven't seen how to install these, watch the YouTube video by Clicking Here.
- DON'T TANGLE THE WIRES! This is the most important thing to remember. The wires can easily become tangled if you knock over the styrofoam base while you are installing the poles. They can also become tangled if you allow too much slack in the wires or take a break in the middle of installing a string of 12 poles. Once the wires are tangled, it is very difficult to salvage that set of Telephone Poles.
- Take it very slow and keep the wires taut. If you pull the styrofoam base too quickly, the rollers will over roll. This will result in tangled wires. Even going at a snail's pace, you will be able to install 12 poles in about three minutes.
- Punch the mounting holes in your layout before you start. If your layout has a styrofoam or hardshell base, use a small screwdriver. If your layout has a wood base, use a drill. Mark your holes so you don't lose track of them when installing the poles. This will allow you to install the set of poles without taking a break. On hardshell or wood you can come back later and glue the poles in place. On styrofoam you don't need to glue the poles.
- Use Super Glue Accelerator. At each end of your 12-pole run, you need to put a drop of thick CA or Super Glue on each insulator to permanently fasten your wires. Spray the insulators with Accelerator before trimming the wires to keep them firmly attached, If you don't use accelerator and don't allow the glue to set properly, there's a good chance a few of your wires will pull out once you trim them. You don't want this to happen. Ask us how we know.
