Painting – Nostalgia Trip: Yonge Street

Nostalgia Trip: Yonge Street

Rapido Trains Inc. has commissioned famous Toronto artist Raffi Anderian to paint a scene of a New Look Bus in Toronto that is certain to bring back fond memories for Torontonians and visitors alike.

Yonge Street has always been a cultural heart of Toronto, and anyone who grew up between the 1950s and the 1990s in the Greater Toronto Area most likely spent far too much of their teenage years browsing records and tapes at Sam the Record Man on Yonge north of Dundas. Raffi has beautifully recreated the feeling of Yonge Street from the 1980s in this impressionist masterpiece.

Nostalgia is not just for our parents and grandparents. For younger generations of Torontonians and transit fans, the 1970s and 1980s are our nostalgia. Nostalgia Trip: Yonge Street celebrates our transit and urban past.

The bus depicted is TTC #8105, a T6H-5307N delivered in 1975. The Yonge 97B has operated between Steeles and either Lake Shore, Front or Queens Quay since 1974.

Raffi has received dozens of national and international awards. Over 1200 of his illustrations are designated cultural property and in the permanent collection of the Library and Archives Canada for their significant contribution to Canadian culture. In 1988, at age 24, he was the youngest person to win the coveted National Newspaper Award for Editorial Cartooning.

In 2002, Raffi moved to Richmond Hill from downtown Toronto with his young family to a home with a studio. Here he started painting landscapes and cityscapes in oils. He has travelled coast to coast throughout Canada, but prefers painting locations closer to home. He has produced art from small oil on panel sketches, such as his wildly popular “Raffi’s Toronto” series, to larger works in oil on canvas.
